Wesleyan Soccer Coach Ian Doherty will not be returning for the 2018 season. After reaching the USA South Conference tournament for the first time in school history and boasting a 7-9-1 record, Doherty has accepted the Head Women's Soccer coaching position at Millikin University in Illinois. The Big Blue posted a similar record at 7-10-1.
Doherty moved to Macon, with his wife Sarah and 2 daughters, after serving as an assistant coach at Wittenberg University. "This past year has been a wonderful experience for me and my family and Wesleyan has been very welcoming and compassionate," stated Doherty, "from a soccer standpoint, very exciting times are ahead!"
Current Wolves assistant coach, Seth Semones, will be stepping in as the interim head coach. Semones has spent 2 seasons with the Wolves contributing to the 2017 success with Ian Doherty. As a member of the NSCAA with a National Diploma and the USSF with a National D License, as well as coaching Club Soccer in the area Semones brings a wealth of soccer knowledge to the program. He played 2 seasons for USA South Conference opponent Maryville College.
"We want to thank Ian for his contributions to Wesleyan athletics and our community as a whole. He has done a tremendous job building culture, recruiting quality student-athletes, and adding a great dynamic to our staff. Although we will be sad to see him go, he has a wonderful opportunity at Millikan and will be closer to family," remarks Director of Athletics Nicky DiMarzio.
A national search will begin immediately to find the next Wolves Soccer Coach. The Wolves will begin their 2018 campaign on Friday, August 31st versus Oglethorpe University.
