Amanda Marsh '04 earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Wesleyan and her master's in leadership and EdS in curriculum and instruction from Georgia College and State University. Marsh spent eleven years in the classroom and served in an instructional coach position for three years before becoming Assistant Principal at Vineville Academy of the Arts.
Why did you choose Wesleyan College?
I chose Wesleyan because of the small classes sizes and the opportunity to have classroom field experience as early as my first year. I had planned to attend a large out-of-state college but when I discovered I would not have classroom field experience until spring of my senior year I knew that was not the college for me. I also had a wonderful Wesleyan recruiter who stayed in contact with me during my senior year of high school. After I started at Wesleyan I worked with her for two years in the admissions office as my work-study assignment.
How did Wesleyan prepare you for your career?
I feel Wesleyan College prepared me for the classroom but also helped set my path in leadership. I served on CAB (Campus Activities Board) all four years and as an officer my last two years. I also served as lead OL (Orientation Leader) for two years, including the summer after I graduated. I appreciated the opportunities to build my leadership skills, arrange events, and learn from wonderful mentors.
Do you believe there is value in a women's college?
I believe a women's college gives young women the opportunity to build confidence, leadership, and find their voices in a small setting. There are definitely great advantages to smaller classes and one-on-one support from professors. I would not have survived biology without Dr. Boettger-Tong's enduring patience and extra study sessions!
What is the education landscape like in Middle Georgia?
Education in Middle Georgia is growing and reaching new heights with support from a highly engaged community and a district with a clear vision and a mission focused on student achievement. I served on the Business Education Partnership with the Macon Chamber of Commerce and was able to witness firsthand the incredible support and passion the community has for supporting education in Middle Georgia.
