Meet Newly Elected SGA President Elspeth Hansen '21

Elspeth (Ellie) Hansen '21, a Munroe Scholar from Miami, Florida, was recently elected Student Government Association (SGA) president for the 2020-21 academic year. Having served as class president in her junior and sophomore years, and as class vice president her first year, Ellie is committed to leading and representing her peers. "If I could accomplish one thing as SGA president, it would be to foster a sense of community that some students may not feel right now because of everything going on in our world. SGA is important for Wesleyan because we have an environment of strong-minded students who can use SGA to effect change," Ellie stated. Having volunteered as a Lane Center for Service and Leadership servant leader since her first year at Wesleyan, Ellie currently serves as an intern with The Lane Center. In 2019, she was awarded the Ethel Roberts Moore Scholarship for leadership and service. "I chose to attend Wesleyan because I was looking for a small environment of people who cared and looked out for others. I wanted to be involved on campus and be close with my peers and didn’t want to be just another number in a classroom." A biology major with minors in business and chemistry, Ellie is planning to pursue her biomedical science graduate degree before before applying to medical school. SGA serves as the voice of the Wesleyan student body and contributes to co-curricular life at the College. SGA also functions as a practical means to establish and maintain effective student governance at the College, to increase a sense of individual responsibility, to work for the common good of each student, and to increase communication between all members of the Wesleyan campus community.
